What you will learn
In this module you will learn about the Equality Act 2010: key provisions, facts and terms, and how it is relevant to your work and women’s rights. You will also learn about public sector duties including an explanation of “due regard”, about competing rights, different types of discrimination, how to gather evidence to make a case, to develop positive action, and protect necessary women-only services.
As feminists we believe women’s and girls’ visions, voices and views should be a central part of the successful implementation of the Act. We would like to encourage women’s organisations to lobby to ensure that women service-users are well-represented and women are a powerful force in making decisions and ensuring accessible services.
Why the Equality Act
Growing inequality is one of the most crucial issues facing societies around the world. Inequality divides continents, countries, communities and societies, and prevents people from enjoying their rights and entitlements. Inequality particularly affects women as can be seen by their general rates of low pay, insecure work, reliance on public services that are being cut, and responsibility for unpaid caring work. The UK Equality Act 2010 offers individuals stronger protection against inequality by addressing discrimination faced by particular groups such as women. It gives organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors more clarity about their responsibilities and the need to treat everyone so that they have an equal chance to succeed. It has particular provision for the public sector in terms of developing equality of opportunity and tackling discrimination.
